Chapter 5

Adrianne

You’re stupid if you even consider his offer. He’s going to ruin you, is that what you want? I told myself everything in the book. That I didn't want to marry for anything but love, and it was true. It always had been true. What girl didn't dream of the fairytale ending, where she lived happily ever after? We all imagined that one day that would be our lives. But then, life happens, and suddenly you're thousands of dollars in debt and wondering if you're going to lose everything. That's when things change, and for me, that started to play heavily on my mind.

It doesn’t have to be forever, I told myself. He was good looking. Heck, he was drop-dead gorgeous, and for a guy like him to even want to look at a woman like me, it made me giddy with excitement. Stop putting yourself down! It was inevitable. I was going to continue thinking that way until I finally had a turnaround in my attitude. Maybe Blake was someone that could eventually get me to think differently. You don’t need a guy. Perhaps I didn't need a guy, but it sure wouldn't hurt.

So, four days later, on a Friday, I found myself ready to accept his crazy proposal. It wasn't even a proposal, but to make myself feel better, I wasn't going to call it that. I took a deep breath as I walked into his main office. If I was going to do this, I needed to see him in person. It didn’t seem right to do it over the phone.

I got off the elevator and walked up to the desk. A woman was on the phone, but the conversation ended once I got up there. She hung up the phone. “Hello.” She smiled. “May I help you?” she asked.

“I’m here to see Blake Blackburn.”

“Do you have an appointment?” she asked.

“No, but I trust he’ll see me.” Look at that. I was so cocky and confident. That was already a new leaf.

“Alright then,” she said. She picked up the phone. “And you are…”

“Adrianne Malloy,” I replied.

“Right,” the woman behind the desk said. She dialed up a number. “Blake, Adrianne Malloy is here to speak with you.” She then hung up the phone. It was that quick. “He’ll be right out,” she said.

“Thank you!” I said.

It wasn't too long before I saw him coming my way. "What a pleasant surprise," he said.

“I needed to speak with you. Can we go somewhere?”

“Yeah…follow me.” He led the way back from where he came from. It was his office. I took a seat across from his desk, although I wasn’t sure nerves would allow me to sit still. He closed the door. The minute I heard the door close, I spoke up.

"I really can't believe I'm about to say what I'm about to say," I said. "But I have given it a lot of thought, and I do think that the only option I have left is what you're offering me while I still think it's a little crazy.
